LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

X-men: Days of Future Past does not disappoint at all. From the beginning, the characters we’d never seen before was breath-taking. The opening scenes with Bishop, Shadowcat, Ice Man, Blink, Warpath and other mutants were fighting with machines called Sentinals to save the future from global extinction of both human and mutants. The movie only got better along with the leadership lessons.

1.    We all have to sacrifice something
If we’d watched the previous X-men movies, we know that Professor X was confined to a wheelchair due to his previous injury. In Days of Future Past, Xavier was up and walking when Logan was sent to the past. Then we discover that Xavier has been taking a drug cocktail that allowed him to regain the use of his leg while losing his telepathic powers. Xavier had a choice to make. Sacrifice his ability to walk or sacrifice his telepathic ability.
The same goes to us. We will come to many paths where we have to make a choice on what to sacrifice. Therefore, we need to be sure to sacrifice the right things.

2.    The common Good may Prevail
As the last remaining mutants are fighting, we can see that Magneto and Professor X join forces to help protect and send Wolverine to the past. These longtime enemies decided to put down their egoistic self and decided the common good was more important than their differences.
We may find there will be time to join with others whom we feel are our enemies. This is because we know something much better will be created if we are willing to put aside our differences.

3.    Find the Common Ground
Professor X, Wolverine and Beast go to meet a young mutant in the past to convince him to join their forces to help free Magneto from his prison. The young mutant was hesitant to trust them. He asked, “How do I know I can trust you?”. Then Wolverine responded with, “We are just like you.” With that, he joined their forces.
When we want someone to trust us, we have to open up. We need to gain their trust by showing vulnerability.

4.    A Good Leader Raises other Leaders
Wolverine who once could barely lead himself was influenced by Professor X to lead others, he was entrusted with the task to reverse the destiny of his whole species. It is good to see the trust that have been given to Wolverine and he took and manage it till the end.
We can say that sometimes, we still need others help and we cannot stand alone. We need someone to lead the way when we are away.
“Just because someone stumbles and loses their way, it doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.” – Charles Xavier
