Gawai Dayak (Dayak Festival)

Since it is near to the Gawai festival, let me just share a little bit of how Gawai are celebrated in the Borneo. It has been 3 years since I've celebrated my last Gawai, well since naik kapal, and this year will be the 3rd year, dekat finals dah so takdpt balik kejap. Rindu nak celebrate hehe. It is to be celebrated on the 31st of May and 1st of June by the the group of people who call themselves Dayak tribe. As per wikipedia, the population of Dayak is around 4 million people. Previously, they were called as Sea Dayak, mostly are Iban, including other ethnics too like Kenyah, Kayan, Bidayuh, Penan and etc. (Orang Ulu). We have the common traits but different dialect, customs, laws and territories. The celebration begins on the 31st of May, when the sacrifices and offerings are being made. What we do on this day is we cast away the evil spirit of greed, Iban calls it Muai Antu Rua. Most of the Dayak have converted to Islam and Christian, so, some of the ritual, they don't practice it anymore, and replaced it to gathering instead. The Ibans believe in the 7 Deities, Sengalang Burong (God Of War), Biku Bunsu Petara ( great priest second in command), Menjaya Manang (the first shaman and god of medicine), Sempulang Gana (God of Land), Selampadai (God of Creation), Ini Andan (God of Justice) and Anda Mara (God of Wealth). The Ibans believe that these spirits will come to attend the festival. So, serving them tuak (rice wine), tumpi (rice cake) etc. is part of the offerings. Everyone will gather on this day, the girls will be cooking, the guys will be drinking and chopping off meat at the same time. Heavy jobs will always be done by the guys. Sharp at 1200 a.m., 1st of June, everyone will be served a glass of tuak shot, Ooooohaaaa is the cheer when you drink. On the 1st of June, it will be either going houses to houses, or a big festival on the street depends on how you wanted to celebrate your Gawai.

The biggest Gawai festival and gatherings for all the Dayaks being held was last year in Kalimantan.
It was soooo big that everyone was wearing the traditional costume which is very rare to witness!

Look at the atmosphere!
