MAKE YOURSELF A LEADER

Moving into a leadership role for the first time need not to be difficult. Nonetheless, it does mean changing your focus and adjusting your goalpost in a way that you can do justice to the new role. Here are few baby steps for us to know and practice for you to go about it.

1. BE A MINDFUL LEADER

It is absolutely a deal-breaker if you are not a mindful leader. To be one, you should know yourself, your strengths, your weaknesses, your drivers. A self aware leaders go a long way as they know how to build themselves.

2. UNDERSTAND TEAM MEMBERS

Bear on your mind whenever you are working in a team, each member are unique. You have to "invest" in each one separately, engage with them, understand their beliefs, their motivation. To be a leader, you will need to lead individuals. Therefore, build strong working relationship with them in order to get the best from them

3. TRUST SUBORDINATES AND DELEGATES

The key difference between an individual contributor and a leader is that while he or she works alone, leader gets the work done through others. Working yourself and getting work done by others are different skill sets. Hence, as leader you have to be confident to delegate.

4. FOCUS ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Once you become a leader, communication skill is critical to success. One has always got to be positive and use the inspiring words. Avoid negative feedback and never use demeaning language.

5. BE SUPPORTIVE, NOT A BOSS

One has to be a genuinely good human being to be a good leader. A leader is sincere and always there to help and support the team member whenever he or she is in a challenging situation. Only then you would be able to gain their trustworthy and also loyalty.
